Prayer flags hang in our backyard near two bird feeders. The other morning I watched a lesser goldfinch checking out the prayer flags. The bird may need some material for nest-building. I am not sure where that is happening or its location. The bird busied itself from one flag to another as it hopped along the main cord holding all the prayer flags.

Our prayer flags remain hung till they naturally decompose. Often it takes years for that to happen. They do get very shredded; easy pickings for a nest-building bird. So I was surprised to see the bird return to newer flags, making its work all the more difficult. In time the bird flew off. Maybe another day it will choose a different flag or totally different nest-building material.

Whatever the bird chooses, it is all amazing to me. Have you seen nests built by birds? Some are small, others huge; capable of holding numerous young and adults within and through all sorts of weather! And the nest may have some strands of prayer flags within it … one busy bird with plenty of work ahead to complete a nest … amazing!
