Rome … Relatives & Trip Home!

No doubt I wished I had more time in Italy; however, this was my first international trip since the pandemic. The 3.5 weeks on the road was a good start. Fortunately I had seen many sites in Rome on previous trips, but on my own I revisited the Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and stopped in at various churches. Plus I just needed to walk.

One walks everywhere in Europe, unless you use a motorcycle or car. Most places you walk many steps up and down; elevators are not in all buildings. My carry-on bag of 20 pounds and my smaller bag of 10 pounds were quite the strength training and cardio workout when I was in some places! But I survived!

Saint Ignatius was one of many churches I stopped in.

My main goal while in Rome was to visit distant relatives of mine. Time to meet their child who was born and now growing up since my last visit! We’ve all aged …..

I really appreciated their generosity in spending time with me. We walked part of the Appian Way, Rome’s very old highway, saw the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and various neighborhoods. My relatives are excellent cooks so I enjoyed meals, especially the lasagna! I made an error in asking for additional lasagna at one meal. My stomach was too full for meat and vegetables in the next course!

Roman Colosseum … unreal, but there and still standing!

I asked for information regarding Sardinia since one family member was from Sardinia. A good future plan for my visit there was recommended, but he was also telling me how important bread is in Sardinia. He shared with me a bread decoration they received at their wedding. I had been to their wedding and was seeing this for the first time:

A wedding gift of bread! So intricate!

It is time to return home. We’re all watching train schedules and airline info to catch our transportation. My train ride to Rome airport and flights home were good, but many hours! At the USA security check, my chunks of Parmesan cheese got checked for explosives. I did not expect that because they were vacuum-packed as required, but such are precautions these days. I loved the time in Italy and all with a perfect balance of a group tour, time on my own and time with family. I met many interesting people and will write another time regarding those important interactions.

Thank you to everyone who allowed me this great opportunity to be back in the international space and to be comfortable and safe in the environment. I wish more people had the ability to see the world, interact with others from around the world, and the ability to enjoy life. If that could happen, I believe humankind would be with a greater appreciation of each other.
